how the money works.

a household runs on money. here's how we handle it.

the household

mutuol is a shared household. everyone who lives here contributes to keeping it running, whether that's through rent, cooking, infrastructure, or something else.

partners
you live here, you're part of it. you have access to shared infrastructure, shared meals, and shared spaces.
roles
roles describe how you contribute to household operations. cooking, infrastructure, vehicles, feelings, finance. everyone pulls weight somewhere.

what you pay

you pay rent and split groceries. same as living with a partner or roommates.

the 20% rule:
the minimum outside income listed on each role is our recommendation for you to comfortably cover your rent and groceries while keeping housing costs under 20% of your income.

rent and groceries
you pay your share of household rent and groceries. this is the baseline.
extras are optional
shared infrastructure costs (hosting, colocation, vehicles) are optional. some partners chip in, some don't.

household roles

some roles run the household full-time. cooking, cleaning, logistics. in exchange, the household covers your rent, food, and gives you a monthly stipend.

your contribution
you run the kitchen, manage groceries, coordinate cleaning. the household is the job.
your compensation
rent, food, and a monthly stipend. funded by the rent and grocery contributions from partners with outside income.
how it works: partners with outside income pay rent and groceries. that pool covers everyone, including household role partners, plus stipends.

keeping it honest

money in relationships is sensitive. we deal with that through process, not awkward conversations.

quarterly reviews:
every quarter, the finance & treasury lead runs a financial review with all partners. we look at the books, check that contributions are covering expenses, and surface any issues.

transparent tracking:
all household expenses and contributions are tracked in shared spreadsheets and dashboards. anyone can see where the money is going. if something doesn't look right, it gets raised in retros.

discretion:
your personal finances are your business. we care that you're able to cover your share. what you do with the rest is up to you.

applying this to roles

when you look at open positions, you'll see two things that matter:

that's the whole system. you pay rent and split groceries, same as any relationship. if you want to contribute more, you can. if you work for the household instead of having outside employment, you're covered by the people who do.
